KSF at Kompong Speu

My strong commitment is to change my country, Cambodia into a better place. To accomplish this commitment I need to take many opportunities that benefit others and myself to share knowledge. Khmer Sight Foundation (KSF)  and I went to  Kompong Speu province. The KSF helps to eradicate avoidable blindness in Cambodia and improve vision and eye care and restore the gift of sight to many thousands of Cambodians. When I arrived Kompong Speu in Camkid school I got so excited to help my beautiful Cambodia people. There were over 100 people a lot of elders and some kids. Those people want to check their eyes and improve vision to see the world clearly. What we did was that first is testing their eyes and if they can’t see well we moved them to the next station to check what the problems they have with the eyes. Then check the blood pressure. The main focus KSF is the cataract and pterygium. My job was to write and gather all of the information people that comes (name, age, where are they from, and the eyes problems they have). Other hardest jobs are to convince and make the people in the community trust KSF to do their eyes surgery. Most of the elders need to do the surgery because their eyes have the cataract and pterygium. Khmer Sight Foundation decide to bring the first 10 people in the community to go and do the surgery. Some people decided to do the surgery and sadly some of them decide not to go. This is because some of them are busy taking care of the kids or wasted their time, they scared to do surgery, some of them didn’t feel comfortable to come, to Phnom Penh with strange people.

There were six people came with Liger students and KSF people to do the surgery. The grandma that came with us she felt nervous and not so comfortable because it is her first time. My friend and I tried to comfort her to make her feel better, and tell her that these doctors are very professional. The grandma named Nhok MIT, 69 years old. She already lost her left eyes and her right eye have cataract problem. I went and asked her she said “I lost my left eye two years ago. Before I lost my left eyesight, this eye has a problem.  I just went to the random pharmacy to check my eye, and they give them medicine.” The more she drank medicine it gets worse and worse. Her family condition is so poor and can’t afford and come to the specialist. So the grandma gave up and have nothing to do with her eye, the result she lost her left eyesight. She also stated that “Before I lost my left eye I took care of my rice field and do farming every day because I need to find the money for my family.” Sadly when she lost her eyesight she has too abundant her work because of it so hard for her. One of the people that work for KSF said, the grandma made a right decision to come and do the surgery for her eye, and we help to change her entire life because if she not comes and did the surgery she will lose her right eye. This means her both eyes will blind. So before Nhok Mit (grandma) came to do the surgery it is so tough for her to make decisions because when she comes to Phnom Penh no one takes care of her and have a kid at home that she needs to take care. We let her and her family decide one of the KSF workers and I told her if she does the surgery 95% she will get success, 4 percents will have damage and 1% will completely blind. Lastly, I went on the bus and then I saw her sitting in front of me with her son to go and do the surgery. I am so proud to volunteer with Khmer Sight Foundation to help Cambodian and share my knowledge with them.

Youth Film Fastival

My name is Vitou Nun, I am one of 11 organizers who are currently planning a new Youth Film Festival (YFF) that will be hosted in Phnom Penh on the 8th of June, 2019. Our goal is to introduce film making to students from government schools, to contribute to the growth of our national film industry, to give the students possible future careers, and to open up their minds to different ways of expressing their thoughts or addressing different problems in society. With this aim, we are working to teach and guide them through the basics of scriptwriting, film producing and editing.

In order to make this project successful, we have been to several government schools in the provinces to provide film workshops, which lasted for two days. After the workshop, the students were required to submit their films in Khmer. The top two films from each school will be showcased alongside three short films from the Chaktomuk Film Festival.

I am writing to you in the hopes that UNDP  will help us to fund our project so that we can spark the interest of young Cambodians in the film industry. All sponsorship funding is directly invested into the festival’s catering and operations. Areas of expenditure include:

  1. Theater rental
  2. Certificates of appreciation
  3. Transportation and food for students, who are directors and editors of their film from 3 provinces: Kampong Thom, Kampong Speu, and Kandal
  4. t-shirts for organizers

Please let us know if you need more information; we would love to help you understand more about the project and its mission if needed.

Banana Farming in Cambodia

Introduction

In 2018, Cambodia exported 30,000 tonnes of banana export to China. According to the General Department of Agriculture Rattanakkiri, Kratie and Kampot provinces and have a total area of 4,996 hectors for survival amount of the 30,00 tonnes to export. Cambodia is not just known as a banana growing country there more fruit that is popular such as; Durian, coconut, mangosteen, lychee, longan, rambutan, mango, jackfruit, and watermelon. Banana is loaded with fiber so it is good to slow down digestion and to keep you feeling full for many hours. One banana can create 10 percent of the daily fiber requirement of everyone who eats it. There are Vitamin B6 that can help to protect against type 2 diabetes and aid in weight loss, according to Flores. In general, bananas are a great weight loss food because they taste sweet and are filling which is really helpful. There are three topics in my study: the cost of farming, disease, and marketing.

Methodology

In this research, we collected data from a successful farmer who owns three banana farm in his area so all the information is based on an interview. In this research project, I mainly focused on collecting data and analyzing the data from this farm in Cambodia.

Results: Diseases (Fusarium Wilt)

The main disease affecting bananas is Fusarium Wilt. Fusarium “is a large group of filamentous fungi (mold), part of a group often referred to hyphomycetes, widely distributed or survived in soil that cause diseases.” Wilt (Verb)(of a plant, leaf, or flower) become limp through heat, loss of water, or disease; droop.

Fusarium Wilt in Khmer called “ក្រាល” had been a major problem of all Cambodia farmer. This disease is so infective to after one and another because they transmitted through soil. This disease happen to stop banana growing and farmer have to cut it off or else they would be transmitted. After the interview one of the farmers said that there are at least 5% of this disease transmitted to one and the other. This disease causes the banana leaf to be orange color and it is so important for the farmer to be more careful because the banana tree that contains this disease will never be harvested. This could lead to a bigger disaster in the future if there is no solution to every farmer who grows banana. It is not just the problem to all the farmer also to the international export might not be able to meet the demand.

This is a baby banana plant that contains Fusarium Wilt.

Results: Costs of Farming & Wholesale

Banana normally spends 6 – 7 months to harvest. This type of plant needs a lot of fertilizer (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) and water because they can easily get affected by the sunlight. The farmer that we interviewed start farming since 1993 but until 2005 he first started to grow banana. Before he grows: Cauliflower, beans, lettuce and does crop rotation. He said that crop rotation is a wonderful way to get a better quality of different train. Crop Rotation means “a method of farming where a number of different plants are grown one after the other on a field so that the soil stays healthy and fertile”. This farmer did a really good job of keep track of what is his future planting. His method is crop rotation which means that every year or difference of time grows different things. Crop rotation means the systematic planting of different crops in a particular order over several years in the same growing space. Therefore Organic soil fertility, avoid or reduce problems with soil-borne disease and soil-dwelling insect and replenish the soil. The farmer said that  “This method had a good impact on his farm because he always gets a good income from a growing variety of vegetable.

This graph showing the expense of a single banana farm.

This graph shows the percentage of where the expend for banana farm go.

The expend that take up more percentage is fertilizer/food. Therefore a lot of farmer in Cambodia have commonly used a lot of fertilizer which leads to the price of the fertilizer more expensive.

Banana farm in Cambodia has been a new major product to import to our biggest investment country “China and Hong Kong” stated Phnom Penh Post Article. Bananas have potential and there is a high demand for the international market. At the same time, farmer sell in the local market around there are especially when they got no transportation budget. Some farmers are sell in the city where there are many people who demand the banana.

A farmer said “ I sell banana in the Nek Meas Market (នាគមាស) because there are a lot people need the banana that is why I decided to go to the city.

At the same time, the Cambodia market still in a limited situation therefore not too many market or middlemen that accept to sell banana. Some farmers still have to sell their own.

Conclusion

All farmer should know what they are paying for if they got a bigger farm in order to see the profit without  losing any money Cambodian farmer needs more knowledge about the disease that they faced also the market of Cambodia

I Changed my Country

About the HFCA internship, I learned so many things. Once every two weeks I went to the KHM stadium with members and players from Happy Football Cambodia Australia to lead a team to compete in the KHM Champion League. HFCA hopes that through football we can give these young people a reason to smile and forget about the issues they face even if its only for a few hours when they are training or playing a game. If they work hard enough they too can dream of one day getting on a plane for the first time to fly to a Homeless World Cup to represent Cambodia. I am really proud to be part of their help to these disadvantaged people. I contribute so much by working as an interpreter for HFCA. I interpret a lot of advances technical words for Football form the coach. HFCA’s coach is Irish and so some of his English accents are a little bit tough for me as a second language speaker but get I over it. Paraic is the coach and I describe him as a questioning person; every time he is mad at the referee at the tournament he’s always going ask directly after the game. He used many strong English words that are hard to tell in Khmer but I am trying to make it easy for the referee to understand. My job is to interpret those words to the referee well and I did it.

I gain tremendous knowledge by working for HFCA. I expand my English skills by interpreting from English to Khmer. I also have a good connection with all the players. I interpret English into Khmer and they said it is much easy to understand. Although some of the players are uneducated, I always make them feel comfortable working with me and enjoy the game. Interpreting and talking to them one on one before and after the game is building a great relationship with them.

As a change agent of the Liger Leadership Academy student, I am really delightful working with disadvantages players under Happy Football Cambodia Australia. I bring so much to the organization even though I am working as an internship program.

Test Lab Flame

This activity is called a flame test and it’s a real procedure used in labs. Its purpose is to identify specific elements in a material. When the boric acid was in the flame, you probably notice a bright green portion of the flame. You may have seen it only briefly but it was there. The green color denotes the presence of the element boron (B) which you’d expect in boric acid. The cream of tartar yielded a purple-colored flame. Purple is associated with the presence of potassium (K). That’s because cream of tartar is a potassium salt.

This is me doing the lab with my teammate and we take turn to take down all the note.

First Job (HFCA)

Currently I am working with HFCA to write all the match report of the team game and work as an interpreter.  Information below is the work that I put in the match of HFCA against Svay Chrum and it also posted in HFCA website.

Match Report

HFCA’ s match against Svay Chrum on March 13th, 2018 was incredible. Both teams gave 100% effort in the game. The game resulted in a draw of 4:4.

During the first half, HFCA had strong ball control. HFCA players scored 3 goals in the first 30 minutes of the game. Svay Chrum did not score. At the first 11 minutes, Hem Sreang scored the first goal from about 25 meters away from net. After that goal, Svay Chrum pushed hard to take over HCFA’s side. Six minutes after the first goal was scored, Mey Monira faked three of the Svay Chrum players and scored a beautiful goal, which made the score 2:0.

Twelve minutes after the second goal, HFCA player Minea made a penalty shot after the fault of a Svay Chrum player, making the score 3:0. After the first three goals were scored by HFCA, the pressure increased. Tit Dina, a player for the national team, was warming up and entered the game. This changed everything. Dina assisted two goals and scored one goal after halftime for Svay Chrum. Dina’s successful passes and ball control helped his team score and become more competitive.

At the end of the first half, HFCA made many defensive mistakes. HFCA seemed to lose control by allowing the opponent to shoot freely without much defense. The score at halftime was 3:2, HFCA leading by one goal.

Within the first fifteen minutes of the second half, Svay Chrum scored two more goals which gave them the lead. Eleven minutes later, HFCA scored again, tying the game. HFCA played strong the first half, but Svay Chrum dominated the second half.

Wife

The wife’s name must be good, while the poor can live

The whole family can survive even from a good wife.

All wives are always happy to support their families

No matter whether today or the day the family is not afraid.

Like the old saying, mother’s name has one hand

There was a lunar day for a hundred Cambodian riel.

Every man should remember the notion of a woman

No matter how difficult and easy it can be.

The wife is so tired she knows, the river, the river, the water

9 months 10 days without mercy when it comes to heavy hurting.

The slump of the life story of my life mate

This is a real thing, but you can listen to your grandchildren.

Talking does not mean that men of all ages have to wait

A lawyer for the woman, Eric is so fierce that she wishes.

Wrong age

Adult craving is good, you are poor, I think

The middle ground is my love true heart.

Love is about age trying to die after the end

Love to help you, you,

Holding this hand, means going in for inspiration

When you take the exam, I really try to break a bang.

When I get to school, I’m not worried about it and owes it

I love you, Nice girl,

Learn how to make money in the future

Life in this family is our desire.

Think of love, both old and old

Anonymous word of mouth reminded me to encourage me.

It is a must-know truth that teaches this life

Thinking about this, she is passionate about this, and she does not even learn.

Do you remember the copper pill because of the odds?

The flow of the bridge is moving like a penguin

The life I remember when I was bullied

When you look back, you look forward to dating.

Promise to say goodbye to a newcomer

I forgot to make a promise because it was meaningless.

Friend

Friends, where you are, do not talk too much

I miss my friend very much a day,

My friends are good at giving me food when I’m hungry

bitter, impartial, love to learn.

From now on we have to live without you, you have to crave fun

Hope to meet and dispel the misery.

Remember, when we do not learn how to play step-by-step

A kick-off shot could be reversed, with a shoving shovel.

Great memories in old age, you have to remember

Every generation has to love what the teacher wants.

Rabies Mission at Chompous Kaek and Koh Krobey Pagodas

On February 8, 2018 my exploration team and I went to two different pagoda to work with Animal Rescue Cambodia which is an organization that vaccinate and do surgery for dogs and cats in Cambodia. As you know in Cambodia there are about 5 million dogs and half of them contain rabies so which mean you are 50% chance of getting rabies because of the bite etc. So Animal Rescue Cambodia and our Liger Leadership Adcademy team went to two that nearby our school to inject the rabies vaccination for free. This is Animal Rescue Cambodia mission but as the Liger students we would love to make change and also would love help them to find the better to inject the pets because we plan alot things to help many different organization or institute to help to reduce the rabies virus in Cambodia. Also I am the one doing the most vaccinate to the dogs and cats. I enjoyed working as a wet to help to reduce the 50% risk of rabies. I love being as a animal wet and I wish somehow in the future I can do this as a part time job because I really love to reduces the problem in Cambodia.
